-A Bit of History- The site of the Colony dates back to some of the first French settlers on Mount Desert Island. Cadillac Mountain, the highest peak on Mount Desert Island, is a name linked to one of these early French families of Hulls Cove, Maine. There is a plaque on the site of the Colony that commemorates this history. True to its cosmopolitan beginnings, the Colony welcomes visitors from all over the world. Bienvenue!

| In 1787 Marie Therese De Gregoire, grand-daughter of
Antoine De La Mothe Cadillac was granted the eastern half of Mount Desert Island. The
family settled in Hulls Cove in 1788. However, it is believed that the children returned
to France in 1800. Barthelmy, Marie Theresa's husband died in 1810. Marie Theresa died in 1811. They are buried in Hulls Cove cemetary. In 1958, a group of Bar Harbor residents dedicated a plaque to mark the site of the De Gregoire residence. The cellar is now overgrown, but the boulder, complete with the plaque is still on a little hill overlooking the Colony Motel in Hulls Cove. The Colony has been family owned since 1950. |
